Chapter II - Gravity

Post by IamLEAM1983 »

The Tree has awakened.

Power has stirred awake in slumbering genetic strands across the county, and Hope is once again faced with emerging metahumans. The Return of the Superhero poses many questions as a concept - some legal, others ethical, but the city starts on a strong note: acting independently, Mayor Doherty unofficially suspends the Superhuman Registration Act, having been promised the support of Governor Caliban Smith in all courts in which their controversial decision should drag them. In the Act's stead, the City Defense Bill is passed and colloquially becomes known as the Holden Hall Act. The group receives the nickname of "Shield" thanks to an impromptu decorative donation by Percival of Evergloam. Reference is made to the Gothic shield that now adorns the Hall's front doors, and also to in-universe comic book publications.

For a time, it feels as though the Hall's recruits have signed up to serve as first-response units for first-time power users, or victims of various flare-ups in potency or ability. The Quigley Road Massacre doesn't let itself be forgotten easily, however, not does the warning Mab herself had been able to impart, before being successfully banished to the depths of Darkest Winter.

Winter and Water. Hell and Fire. The Breath and the Flesh. All would cower.

Leonard Ephesian's nights have been troubled, as of late. Father Xavier Curran tries his best to pass his friend's concerns to the Diocese in the hopes of being able to reach one of the few licensed Catholic exorcist priests in America. Mere hours after what seemed like an optimistic email, he is told that the man who could have given peace to Hope's premier Corporate Defense lawyer died a mysterious and grisly death inside the Archbishop's office in Washington. The autopsy reports are unsettling.

Desperate, Curran and Ephesian turn to the Shield gang, ready to waive any fee imaginable if they'd only spend a few hours serving as watchdogs in the city's court of law. The old goat is filled with apprehension when he mentions his client, fully aware that he is stepping forward to shield a reprehensible man from retribution. He says he's worked with worse men than Weasel Biggs by far, and the man he has with him is the spitting image of that fact. Ephesian, a grown man who's come to the aid of many a hardened criminal, is positively terrified by what seems to be nothing but a slight and reedy man...

Things soon distort over the afternoon. Ephesian's poise and demeanor seem strangely different, as he returns from the men's bathroom. His own apprehensions seem to have been passed on to his client, who now is the one who looks miserable...

New energies are stirring and old ones are making themselves manifest. Even Aislinn's newest acquaintance and Tam's second boss starts to act... differently. A string of attempted assaults shake Ephesian's routine, leaving him strangely unscathed every time...

Local diviners and spirits are in agreement - the summer's buildup has passed and fall's time of transitions is at hand. Somehow, this year seems like it'll pack more than your usual lightweight paranormal investigations or the purported sightings of Evangeline Buck... Something dark and strange is building up in the air, like a delayed follow-up to the Buck curse. Did the recent Awakening let it loose, or is that strange pall walking in the footsteps of Mab's offered prophecy?

Demons walk in sacks of flesh and angels come in shafts of light, distant shades reach out with more power and intellect than in the centuries past...

First, Faerie came in screaming and kicking. Now, angels and demons stake their claim. The question is, why?

I'm just going over the various subplots we've got going for this upcoming chapter. Incubus/club owner!Thomas Quint, the introduction of the Red Baron and Nami, and Meris moving in with George unbeknownst to Shield, plus the main one with Leonard, Bob, and whatever other angels or demons happen to show up. I'd say that's a pretty good set of plot points; when do you want to wrap up the current game and start this one?

Whenever you're ready, honestly. The guys already went over the logistics of it all, the group's finances look like they've been squared for now... I'd say we're green to go.

I think you can write up an end post/epilogue, and we can archive it and start up the new game.
