Wyvern, the Orkneys and... Data Centers?

Post by IamLEAM1983 »

This is kind of interesting...

For the past two years, Microsoft has been monitoring a large stack of servers sealed in a tube and anchored to the sea bed, off the coast of one of the Orkney Islands. It's apparently a cheaper cooling solution than freshwater pipes, the produced heat and decibel levels don't really seem to bother the local wildlife (they even managed to take snapshots of fish schools and seals using the container as a landmark) and it helps that most of us tend to live some distance away from a reasonably close coastline. Data centers could therefore take up less space on land, especially considering how Moore's Law doesn't really apply anymore - and wouldn't really apply in the Hopeverse, circa 2027. You could seal up hardware for long stretches of time that its failure rate would actually be lower than land-based data farms.

So, I got to thinking. Wyvern crunches a lot of data, Aldergard and Magnus both have a certain degree of healthy paranoia in place, and they'd probably want to make sure that their subsidiaries' project and client files are as hard as possible to access. I can't think of much of anything that'd be harder to physically access than a sealed-up tube in the Northern Sea. Fuck, even Marius could be interested in this.
