Throw in some magic, and these kind of conditions, and I think I have an idea of how the first selkies got started... :)

It definitively works. I'd gloss over the initially poor long-distance divers or the first pelt-wearing Orcadian natives who couldn't manage their second animal form - history being written by the victor and whatnot - but yeah.

I never figured basic Darwinism never applied to any particular species. The selkies are a case of humans having to adapt to a new environment and set of living conditions, which involved some losses and sacrifices, and so are the anthros.

In any case, I bet Aislinn's spleen would put Tom's to shame. Poor fella's definitely a native landlubber.
