Theme Songs

Sophia's neck of the woods (pun intended), this is where you should head for any meet-and-greet you'd like to partake in, as well for any discussion that isn't related to role-playing. Have fun, go crazy - but keep your nose clean.

Assassin's Creed Odyssey has great theme song bookends. They tackle themes which I think fits with your two Power Ladies. I figure the opening version, which plays in Greek, would fit Aspasia fairly well. The modern version feels to me like it fits Meris better, in either case, both have identical lyrics.

Look to the stars
Beyond the mountains and the wild sea
Follow your dreams
The bravest hearts
The gods will favor those who dare to see
Courageously
For destiny

Beautiful Island
Bathed in the rising sun
Faith's hand will guide you
Travel in path alone
Back to the warmth of home

Through storms we'll rise
And battles fought under a raging sky
Through watchful eyes

Fearless we breathe
With silent whispers through the ancient trees
Where legends grow
We live in whole

Beautiful Island
Bathed in the rising sun
Faith's hand will guide you
Travel in path alone
Back to the warmth of home

This is going to be one of the more obvious ones, but I'm Going Slightly Mad by Queen pretty much fits all the Freaks. However, with future plot points, I think of Arthur, and Freddie Mercury's Britishness adds to it. And I think the listener he's singing to could be Sophia.

I've never spent much time listening to New Wave stuff beyond my parents' brief infatuation with everything Annie Lennox, but there's something to HEALTH's cover of New Order's Blue Monday that makes me think of Nereus confronting his loss of devotion, perhaps coming to grips with the idea that Amaxi and the Chamberlain are abusive and toxic. I doubt he'd make an EDM show out of it, much less New Order's original orchestration, but HEALTH's added beats feel darker, more urgent - like he's working up the nerve to fight back.

It won't change the fact that the track is practically synonymous with Atomic Blonde, for me. I can imagine Nereus working up the nerve to confess his doubts to Meris for the first time; but that car chase scene, man. That car chase scene.

How does it feel
To treat me like you do?
When you've laid your hands upon me
And told me who you are?
Thought I was mistaken
I thought I heard your words
Tell me, how do I feel?
Tell me now, how do I feel?

Those who came before me
Lived through their vocations
From the past until completion
They'll turn away no more
And I still find it so hard
To say what I need to say
But I'm quite sure that you'll tell me
Just how I should feel today

I see a ship in the harbor
I can and shall obey
But if it wasn't for your misfortune
I'd be a heavenly person today
And I thought I was mistaken
And I thought I heard you speak
Tell me, how do I feel?
Tell me now, how should I feel?

Now I stand here waiting
I thought I told you to leave me
While I walked down to the beach
Tell me, how does it feel
When your heart grows cold?

Another Hozier song, but I thought this one fits Ciaran after Sophia's passing and his departure from Hope. I figure she's like a beacon to him and is what will keep him going in those coming months. I think it conveys his devotion to her quite well. And the feel better lyric makes me think of his knowledge that she will return one day, and it's almost like a prayer to her.

Given the events of the serial rp, Arrows by the Foo Fighters fits Morgan's motivations possibly, maybe even Mab.

Seeing as Eiji Katsumoto is a California-based Japanese Fae, I figure he would've melded a lot of influences together as a casual musician. I picture him as being decent on the shamisen, and being drawn to Bluegrass music in his later American years.

Meld them together, and you get something like this.

I've been listening to Florence and the Machine's Breath of Life repeatedly, and it felt like it's a song that represented how Ariel felt, particularly during the Fall. It took me a bit of time to interpret how it resonated with her character, but it definitely does. I feel like some of the lyrics are the voices she hears at The Ears of God with the variety of conflicting opinions and desires from angels and demons. I think it also conveys she might've lost some friends during those events, like many did. Some only half-heartedly fell, while some embraced it entirely.

Ha oh
I was looking for a breath of life
A little touch of heavenly light
But all the choirs in my head sang no
To get a dream of life again
A little of vision of the start and the end
But all the choirs in my head sang no

But I only needed one more touch
Another taste of heavenly rush
And I believe, I believe it so
And I only needed one more touch
Another taste of devouring rush
And I believe, I believe it so

Whose side am I on, whose side am I?
Whose side am I on, whose side am I?

And the fever began to spread
From my heart down to my legs
But the room was so quiet oh
And although I wasn't losing my mind
It was a chorus so sublime
But the room is too quiet (oh, the fever)

I was looking for a breath of life,
A little touch of heavenly light
But all the choirs in my head sang no (I believe it)
To get a dream of life again
A little vision of the start and the end
But all the choirs in my head sang no

Ha oh
Ha oh
It's a harder way
And it's come to claim her
And I always say
We should be together
I can see below
'Cause there's something in here
And if you are gone
I will not belong here

And I started to hear it again
But this time it wasn't the end
And the room was so quiet, oh
And my heart is a hollow plain
For the devil to dance again
And the room was too quiet, oh

I was looking for a breath of life
A little touch of heavenly light
But all the choirs in my head sang no

Kaleo's Hot Blood reminds me of Melmoth and his growing love for Abdiel, along with turning away from Hell. The hot blood is an obvious reference to the pact they made, and the overall tone might be more overt than Melmoth is willing to admit presently, but I think the passion behind the lyrics and melody work for how he feels. I think it also hints at some of the secrecy they might have to deal with as a couple.

This isn't so much related to a single character as to the post-Gen Z-ers in the Fae.

You're culturally savvy enough to follow with modern musical trends, but you've got a foot in a culture that still thinks Greensleeves is a novel rythmic invention and that dating requires dozens of distinct steps before a couple is so much as formed. You've got a large swath of semi-deathless types to profit from who haven't heard anything more modern than Rule Britannia or Yankee Doodle in their first years of active use - so what do you do?

You take modern hits and adapt them with a Late Medieval orchestration, tweaking the lyrics so they fit.

To that end, here's Hildergarde von Blingin's rendition of Foster the People's Pumped-Up Kicks, here retitled Buskin Boots.

And yes, this is a real thing. Medieval Shitposting, as it's referred to, is starting to crop up on YouTube. Incidentally, the Gruffs and other partially out-of-touch types could be convinced this is original material, and not a tweaked cover.

Hildergarde von Blingin' - Buskin Boots
Robert hath a swift hand
He doth gaze upon the fyrd, and he maketh a plan
He hath a jaunty cap, perched upon his head, he is a longbowman
He did find an old bow of yew
And a quiver of arrows in his father’s chest, wherefore I cannot say
But he cometh for thee, yea he cometh for thee

All ye bully-rooks with your buskin boots
Best ye go, best ye go
Outrun my bow
All ye bully-rooks with your buskin boots
Best ye go, best ye go, faster than mine arrow

Father worketh all day
And he cometh home late, yea he cometh home late
Mayhaps he bringeth me a gift
For stew is in the pot though it doth taste of grit
I have waited e’re long
Now mine eye is quick and mine arm is strong
I reason with my crooked cap
And say “Thou art an artless, greasy tallow-catch.” Yea

All ye bully-rooks with your buskin boots
Best ye go, best ye go
Outrun my bow
All ye bully-rooks with your buskin boots
Best ye go, best ye go, faster than mine arrow

There's something to Vanity Machine's Makes me Feel Better that reminds me of the bug I've nestled in the back of Archie's mind, and that also reminds me of Lucifer, for all of his rebellious and simulation-aware tendencies. Either way, Cyberpunk 2077's unofficial theme is a good fit for both characters. I imagine Archie's helper AI sort of blossoming into the rebellious offspring Anjali didn't turn out to be, and Lucifer's already the type to rather cheerfully reject all forms of authority he isn't personally invested in.

Also, it sort of figures that an AI partially spawned from Archie's own mind would aggressively flirt with everything that still shocks the old bean, from Punk culture to the sort of technofetishism you'd expect of full-body conversions in the Hopeverse. Screw violins, he'd prefer dirty vintage Russian sequencers and Moog modules that would've done a stint or two in Giorgio Moroder's studio.

Vanity Machine - Makes me Feel Better

My reflection
In this broken mirror
Is a program
In my head

This corruption
With your atmosphere
Plays a question
In my head

I'm not your machine
Not your virus to control
('cause it makes me feel better)

Now I'm thinking, free
I'm unplugged, but not alone
('cause it makes me feel better)

'Cause it makes me feel better

My reflection
What I choose to see
Is the program
In my head

I'm not your machine
Not your virus to control
('cause it makes me feel better)

There are more of me
We're unplugged, but not alone
('cause it makes me feel better)

'Cause it makes me feel better

Oh, it makes me feel
Better
